vol / fullScandinavian Transformation of Japanese Resist Techniques

with Joy Boutrup & Malene Kristiansen

This 5-day workshop is related to the Exhibition Mina Perhonen (Label Akira Minagawa) at the Audax Textile Museum in Tilburg on show from 24/10 2009 till 28/02 2010.

Tutors are Joy Boutrup (textile engineer) and Malene Kristiansen (textile designer) both living and working in Denmark.

The course takes its outset in some Japanese resist techniques. They are used as means to create smaller samples. These samples will then be scanned, transformed and digitally printed. The prints will be used as a background for experiments with further embellishments such as embroidery or foil transfer.

The final product will be aimed at either a pillow or a fabric for furoshiki*)

Techniques covered are:
Shibori: Mokume (running stitch) Ori nui (fold and stitch)
Itajime (clamp resist) and Kanoko (spider web)
Kasuri :(European interpretation of mechanical resist printing with potato dextrin as thickener)
