Presented in the cultural-historical context of Mali, this workshop is an introduction to a traditional West African painting technique: Bogolan painting with mud on canvas, using only natural African pigments from trees and mud from Mali. Working in collectives with many symbolic references is a concept and working method infrequently seen in Western societies. Participants will get acquainted with this approach during this workshop.
Participants will sketch designs on paper and on natural pigment-prepared canvas, then paint with raw colours such as bogo (mud) from the River Niger, and n'galama (yellow) and n'peku (red) from the leaves and bark of Mali trees. Each layer must be rinsed and dried before the next layer of color can be applied to the canvas, and the pigments are irreversible once applied. Mixing the natural pigments creates a rich range of colors in this wonderful process. If time permits, removing colour from parts of the canvas with soap will also be explored.
This workshop is for all levels. Spoken language: English
