Mud painting from Mali

A special workshop presented by 2 students of the FONTYS Academy of Art in Tilburg i.e. Laura Oerlemans en Michelle Ouwerkerk.

A group of students of this academy went to Mali for a special project to study the Bogolan technique. Bogolan is a traditional form of art in Mali which uses natural pigments to paint on cloth. These pigments consist of mud from the river the Niger, of boiled tree bark from the n'peku and leaves from the n'galama bush. When the students went home they took all these materials with them to present this special technique to the Dutch Audience.  Zijdelings is offering them an opportunity to do so.

Laura en Michelle have learned the Bogolan technique from Goro, a textile artist belonging to the‘Groupe Kasobane'. This group has brought the tradional technique to a higher level of art. Together with students from the art academy in Mali the Dutch students worked for 3 intensive weeks to study and learn Bogolan from the Master himself.

This technique requires great skill and precision since the process is very labour intensive. It takes days, not to say weeks to obtain a very intense and deep colour by layering one after the other.  Because of the factor time and of the weather conditions we have to restrain ourselves during this workshop to one layer of colour only.

The workshop is meant as an introduction to an old technique. By the end of the day participants will go home with a selfmade Bogolan cloth. You will create your own design using the original materials from Mali. Part of the material will be prepared by Laura en Michelle, another part will be prepared by the participants themselves, e.g. the white and also the colours may be mixed to your own preference. Besides the hands on activities Laura and Michelle will also explain the meaning of the symbols used on the fabric.

For those of you who are interested to learn more about the study project as a whole we advise you to check the weblog of the students  http://www.kunstnomade.com/
