Design processes: hand print, digital print and embroidery

4-day workshop with Malene Kristiansen (DK)

A four-day workshop in monochrome print, digital print and embroidery.

After a short introduction we will start with a lecture in print and repeat patterns, followed by a hands on session of collages on paper and/or sketching on fabrics, exploring patterns painted with reactive dyes, direct on screen with brushes and printed on silk fabrics with thickener.   A selected pattern is scanned or photographed and sizes, repeats, layers, colours, etc. are manipulated on the computer. The pattern will then be digitally printed in the TextileLab at the Audax Textile Museum, steamed and washed out and embroidered on the surface (day 1 and 2).

On day 3 we will continue to screen print, analyse the digital print, enabling you to do a digital reprint and work on these prints again. we also will start to embroider our samples.

If there is still time your sample can get a chemical treatment on top (burn out) on day 4.

Main focus:
- to develop new design processes, concepts and products and to stimulate aesthetic and artistic skills in the crossover between sketching directly on fabrics, digital print and embroidery.
- to obtain design solutions based on knowledge of the interaction between fabrics, patterns, colours and threads.
- to ease the development of your designed pieces, the instructions will be a combination of individual discussions and group reviews and general mentoring.

In this class the emphasis will be on the designing process and the conceptual idea of the textile.
Participants need therefore to be familiar with analogous print and know how to use Photoshop or Illustrator.
