Dr.Zane Berzina

The smart textile workshops at ZIJDELINGS will be supervised by textile designer, artist and researcher Dr. Zane Berzina who's own creative practice and research concentrates on active, interactive and responsive textiles employing cross-disciplinary working methods. Since 1991 she has widely exhibited in Europe and held numerous solo exhibitions in Riga, Helsinki, Berlin and London. Recent exhibitions include ‘Cloth and Culture NOW' at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, Norwich and at the Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester; ‘Inspired Design‘ at the Center for Craft, Creativity and Design, North Carolina, USA; ‘Sk-interfaces‘ at FACT - Foundation for Art and Creative Technology, Liverpool; ‘Our Cyborg Futures‘ at the Discovery Museum in Newcastle; ‚Skin Stories II - Archaeology of Skin' at the Foreign Art Museum in Riga, Latvia; ‘Touch Me' at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London; ‘Designers‘ Saturday' in Langenthal, Switzerland.

Dr. Berzina has worked as a lecturer at The University of Arts Berlin, College of Design and Architecture, Institute for Experimental Fashion and Textile Design, Germany and at the Goldsmiths College, Visual Arts Department, University of London. She gives guest lectures, masterclasses and consultations at various higher education institutions and design companies internationally. Currently Dr. Berzina is a Research Fellow at the Constance Howard Resource and Research Centre in Textiles, Goldsmiths College, University of London and an Associate of the Goldsmiths Digital Studios. She is also a Co-Founder and Co-Director of e-text+textiles culture initiative in Riga, Latvia. From October 2008 Dr. Berzina has been appointed to take up a Professorship for Textile and Surface Design at the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weissensee in Germany.
