3Day workshop with Daniella Woolf

The ancient technique of encaustic is an exciting tool when used to expand one's visual vocabulary. In this workshop designed especially for textile and fiber artists, you will learn how easy it is to transfer images onto a number of surfaces, as well as metal leafing, collage working with line and edge, and mixed-media techniques. For example, we work in a segment entitled Away With Words. For those of you who journal, are inspired by words, text, letters, typography, we will explore the many ways to employ text in your work.

Safety procedures and setting up your studio will be addressed, as well as a presentation on Encaustic with a Textile Sensibility. This versatile, durable and translucent medium creates amazing layers, textures and surfaces beyond your wildest dreams!

What to bring to the Encaustic Workshop

*5-10 pcs plywood 8" x 8" (ca. 20x20 cm)
No coating on the surface - rigid and absorbent. Any thickness. baltic birch is the best.

If you want a white ground for encaustics, you can glue a piece of heavyweight watercolor or printmaking paper, museum board, unprimed linen or canvas to the panel using any type of archival glue (e.g. Berol Marvin PVA) - there will be work time during the class to prepare panels.

* brushes: 2 or 3 flat (hake, 1",2") or other small flat brushes, and 2 or 3 small round ones.. Daniella prefers the split shank Hake brushes. No synthetic or used brushes
(Note: Hake brushes are for sale at Zijdelings during the workshop)

*Mark making tools:
old dental tools, ceramic trimming tools, palette knives, awl, cookie cutters, metal punches or stamps, etc.

*images for transferring (photocopies), drawings, watercolor, tempera or gouache paintings, papers you like working with or works on paper. collage and assemblage materials, Joss Paper, copper/metal foils, textile foil, carbon paper, saral, charcoal, graphite
(Note: various foils, saral and special pencils are for sale during the workshop at my studio)

*absorbent 3-dimensional surfaces or object (optional)
(unglazed ceramics, plaster, or wood, paper pulp / cast paper)

*found objects  
*stencils

Anything else you would like to experiment with such as:
fabrics (sheer, polyester or silk organza, silk Habotai (ponge), cotton scrim, muslin etc, and thread.

Basic artists tool box: (brushes as mentioned above) heat gun (optional), scissors, single edge razors (utility blades), burnisher or paperfolder, cardboard shim, pencil, masking tape, blue painter's tape, duck tape, roll of waxed paper (= optional), ruler or straight edge, xacto knife, painting clothes or apron. Sketchbook for notes.
Extension cord/ surge protector (optional)

To keep costs as low as possible we will take care of several basic materials and tools.
A lab fee needs to be paid to cover costs like encaustic gesso, encaustic medium, white beeswax and special paper.
Hot wax stylus pens, torch heads + butane canisters and encaustic paints will be extra.
