Modern Mola

with Joost Post

Mola is a special, colourful textile design technique from the Kuna-Indians in Panama (Central-America).

Traditional molas are made in a so called reversed appliqué technique: multiple layers of different coloured cotton fabrics are sewn together after which they are partly cut and removed.

Traditional mola fabrics are used for blouses, belts, bags etc.

During this workshop we will be inspired by this technique only, so we are not going to make traditional work.

By using less obvious materials, like crêpe fabrics, voiles, silk and special shrinking wool, surprising effects will occur.

The different layers of cloth will be stitched together by machine and then cut away. By adding wool (visible or not) shrinkage will happen resulting in special effects.

It is possible to create 2 completely different sides (reversible) and partial transparency can be obtained as well.

This method is very suitable to use for light weight cloth, sheers and supple fabrics to create scarves and stola's
