Rusting the Surface

with Cherilyn Martin

As a result of the demos Cherilyn gave during the Textile Weekend at the beginning of October, there were many requests for a workshop using rusting techniques. We now can offer a refreshed version of this workshop.

During this workshop we will work with "Rusting Powder". This product offers quicker results than the time consuming classical method of using rusty nails etc.

Cotton, silk and paper are the basic materials which will be used in combination with a number of "surface design" techniques. Stencilling, block printing and thermofax screens will be used to create deigns. Resist techniques such as simple shibori will be used to explore "mark-making".

The rusting powder will be used with acrylic wax, matte medium and black gesso; gilding flakes and transfer foils will be used to further embellish the surface.

We will experiment with making "mouldable paper" so that 3D shapes can be explored.

The results of these experiments are suitable for use in quiltmaking, in embroidery and book projects and general art work.
