Exploring Design with Paper Collage with Linda Colsh (USA/BE)

Using printed and painted papers, this design class presents value as the key to understanding composition and design. Students will complete a variety of exercises using simple, easy paper collage techniques to explore the elements of design. All of the ideas and principles learned in working with paper images can be applied at home to working with cloth. For those who have digital cameras and home computers with printers, information can be given about ways to use the collages made in class on fabric.

Student Supply List

  • Black & white images. At least 50 images, bring old papers, toner & inkjet copies, photocopies, magazines, newspapers, drawings, text, etc (variety of texture, line, abstract, realistic, simple, complex....)
  • In addition to images, bring at least 3 magazines plus at least 4 newspapers to use both cut up and as table cover or layering for drying work
  • A4 pad (blok) paper (Bristol or similar): 1 black pad, 1 white pad
  • 2 or 3 sheets cardboard or posterboard (A4 or larger)
  • 1 roll clear sticky tape (ex. Magic or Scotch)
  • 2 glue sticks & 1 bottle white school glue (ex. Pritt)
  • Black markers & permanent pens (optional: various widths of black felt pens)
  • Acrylic paint: 1 each jar or tube of black, white
  • several brushes: sponge, bristle (2 to 3cm), small watercolor brush, etc
  • 5-6 empty jars or pots for water & mixing paints & plastic spoons
  • Styrofoam fruit/veg trays or plates for mixing paints
  • Pencils & sharpener
  • Ruler
  • Paper scissors (optional rotary cutter & mat)
  • Trash bag
  • digital camera (if you have one)
