About the workshop
This workshop is an introduction to marquetry & surface embellishment techniques for recycled synthetic fabrics using the Graphixscan laser. During the workshop you will learn how to design and laser cut, etch and bond your own sample fabrics and explore different techniques, which can be used to ‘upcycle' synthetic materials.
During the 3 days you will:
An assortment of suitable polyester fabrics will be provided for you to purchase for the workshop. You may also bring your own 100% synthetic fabric to try out, but results are then not guaranteed. Please feel free to bring any of your own design work as inspiration for your workshop designs.
SDA members have priority to enter this class.
However, non members may register as well as from august 15.
Kate Goldsworthy (UK)
Kate is Senior Lecturer for the Textile Futures masters programme at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, University of the Arts London. She also works as an independent designer and researcher specialising in new finishing technologies, materials R&D and design for sustainability, including 10 years as Lead Designer with Line, a London based creative consultancy with a broad range of global textile industry clients. Kate is currently completing a practice based PhD project exploring emerging technologies, to reinvent ‘digital finishing processes' for recyclable materials.
Her design work has been exhibited internationally, recently including the Science Museum, London, and in the Warp Factor 09 exhibition in China, Japan, and UK.
Kate is also a member of the University of the Arts Textile Futures Research Centre (TFRC).

Note:
this workshop is for intermediate and advanced level only.
Students need to bring their own laptop with Adobe Illustrator
and a memory stick. And of course have at least a basic knowledge
how to work in A.I.
There will be a surcharge for used materials (fabrics/non wovens/dyes/foils etc)

This class is related to ECOVISION, the 2nd Conference organised in
Tilburg for the European members of the Surface Design Association.
