10 & 11 Dec.2010: Encaustic - Image, Line & Texture

Encaustic is HOT!! This technique is very popular at the moment especially in America, where it is frequently used by mixed media artists; however it is in fact a very old way of working with wax.

In this 2 day workshop the basic techniques of encaustic will be introduced, so as we saw earlier this year working with Daniella Woolf. The advantage of this workshop is that the teacher is (also) Dutch speaking, so that it will be easier to follow.

We will work on sturdy types of paper such as watercolour or handmade paper, birch plywood and/or wood and on special wooden frames. (NB. These frames will be supplied by the teacher.)

We will begin with preparation of the surfaces with e.g. encaustic gesso and/or watercolour paper; application of the encaustic medium and further surface treatments.

Photo transfer will be addressed using photocopies of images from students personal collection.

Complex effects will be achieved when colour is applied in layers.

Building texture plays an important role in this workshop: mixed media, fabrics and threads will be added to the surface and stencils used to add relief.

Several mediums and techniques will be used to explore line: e.g. etching & filling with coloured wax, stamping and personal graphite drawings and rubbings using Saral transfer paper.

During the workshop students will be encouraged to develop their own personal visual language.

Different tools will be introduced: students will have the chance to work with a special warming palette and they will also use a professional, adjustable IWATANI torch/burner using butane gas and as well as an electric hot wax art stylus.

For this workshop there will be additional charges for materials (info to follow).

NB: for those who are interested in gaining more information about this technique there are several English language publications and DVD's which can be ordered from Zijdelings. Also all necessary materials are already available from Zijdelings and can be also ordered on-line

9 October 2010: Creative Ways with Thermofax

A much requested day working with Thermofax

During this workshop every student will learn to make their own thermofax screens. Not only text but also designs will be used for this. Attention will be paid to creating personal designs.

These screens will be used in a creative way using a wide variety of mediums: thickened transfer paint, puff paste, rusting powder, transfer foils, embossing powders, discharge paste and textile paint.

Prints will be repeated and mediums combined to explore layering.

Synthetic fabrics and non wovens, cotton, silk and paper will be used for printing.

The knowledge gained in this workshop can be applied to future quilting & embroidery, fashion, book and paper projects.

23, 24 & 25 Sept. 2010: Pojagi and Beyond

Pojagi patchwork wrapping cloths have been used in Korea for many generations at ceremonies like weddings, rituals and in the household for various types of coverings and wrappings. The traditional pieces use several stitching methods among them, a triple stitching technique called gekki. The resulting seaming creates stiff, strong linear elements that can be used as design components in larger pieced two and three dimensional work. Traditional fabric, nobang, offers the variations in transparency, depthness and moving quality. Once participants have learned the basic techniques of Pojagi, they are encouraged to experiment and to adapt the techniques and concepts to their own needs and interpretations.

Students will learn the basic techniques of making Pojagi (Korean patch work). They will learn several ways of fabric construction techniques for Pojagis which also could be incorporated into fabric and or paper collages and or mixed media works. While the technique is adaptable to many forms of work; 2-D, 3-D, either architectural, body ornaments, soft sculptures, and or wearables. ; participants' practice span intimate wearable works, through to large scale industrial installation. . Students will be challenged to think about 'wrapping' with new approaches, and to think conceptually. Works may have either a fine art or a design orientation.

11 September 2010: Encaustic & Textile Collage

In this workshop the emphasis lays on collage making with wax. Fabulous effects can be achieved by combining all sorts of fine, transparant fabrics like organza, gauze or voile, tule and cotton scrim with lightweight paper.

Sturdy paper is used as a base for building up collages in order to make wall decorations or heavy carton for making book covers.

All wax layers are fused together with a heatgun or an encaustic iron and manipulated and worked on to create beautiful and interesting structures.

Subsequently all sort of materials can be added to the top layer, such as metal flakes, threads, lace or fibres

A 3D-effect can be created by applying an extra thick layer of wax on specific places. As a finishing touch photocopies can be transferred, metal leaves or textile foils can be added. Also handwritten texts or handmade drawings on tracing paper with carbon pencils or crayons can be transferred onto the wax collage.

Scratching in the top wax layer will create depth. Colour can be added by applying markal paintstiks. The result will be stunning!

30 Aug.-2 Sept. 2010: Felt and Embellishment

This class focuses on articulation of design/imagery, building surface dimension and free-motion embroidery.

General Description:
Build third dimension off a felted ground fabric through sampling and innovating a variety of wet felting, needle felting and machine stitching techniques. From subtle textural fields to bold protuberances, achieve dimension by partial felt appliqué, fusing pre-constructed fabrics, embedding solid felt forms, needle/wet felting complex felt forms to the surface, and using plastic resists for creating flapped, pocketed, and ridged textures. Additionally, free-motion machine embroidery will be used to crater thick felt and to manipulate thin felt into undulating fabric.

Tentative Schedule:
Day 1:
create pattern/design and imagery through the felting process using partial felts for felt appliqué and felt reverse appliqué to achieve control of textured patterning

Day 2:
embedding solid felt forms between layers of felt and fusing under layers of fabric

Day 3:
needle/wet felting complex and highly dimensional shapes for wet felt attachment to a background

Day 4:
using plastic resists to create surface flaps, caves and ridges

*Free-motion machine embroidery to be demonstrated and discussed throughout the whole course as samples dry
Note: Free-motion embroidery will be applied throughout the course on Day 2-4 when the felt is dry as sewing on wet felt oviously rusts the machines.

This class is for advanced felting level and teaches sampling techniques for building a vast array of surface textures which can be incorporated into a variety of 2D and 3D applications, however it is not a course in product development.
