5-daagse workshop o.l.v. Elin Noble

Alternative & ancient methods for applying natural dyes to cellulose and protein fibres

Elin Noble is coming back again this August with a new intensive 5-day class - customized for Zijdelings - around alternative and ancient methods for applying natural dyes to cellulose and protein fibers

Workshop Description:

Incorporating information and techniques from Michel Garcia’s recent video, “Beyond Mordants: Indigo Intensive and Direct Application of Dyes,” we will explore alternative processes for dyeing natural fibers.

Many processes will be presented, including:

*Dyeing protein fibers in a bath with the ancient method of combining lac and tamarind.

*Using dye extracts mixed with mordants, we will explore direct application as a one step coloring process.
  This process includes steaming.

*On cellulose fibers we will explore direct application of indigo and other insoluble natural dyes, such as annatto and alkanet. The dyes will be made permanent in hot water solutions.

The colors used in this class come from concentrated natural dye extracts and dried plant material. Our focus will be on small scale work and samples.

This class is not for beginners
