Experimenting with Magnetic Field Printing Techniques

2-daagse workshop o.l.v. Jenny Leary (UK/USA)

About This Workshop:

Students will learn to design with magnetic fields in this two-day workshop with E-Textile expert Jenny Leary. There are many ways that we can use textile materials to make elusive magnetic fields tangible. While creating textiles with all kinds of magnets, we will familiarize ourselves with their physical shape. At the same time, students will be learning the fascinating science behind magnetism through lectures and discussions. You will come away from this workshop being able to use the magnetic textile techniques applied in Iris van Herpen's haute couture and Jolan van der Wiel's gravity stools.

Workshop Aims:

  • Begin to permanently alter magnetic field patterns. You will learn not only how to manipulate them, but also how to convert them into a tangible form so that you can check your designs.
  • Transfer invisible field patterns onto a variety of substrates. We will experiment with a variety of paper and textiles.
  • Explore the function of the printed fabrics. See how the resulting fabrics naturally interact with magnetic rubber. You will be introduced to an innovative applique-like technique for creating pliable magnetic surfaces by applying magnetic rubber onto textiles.

Materials to use:

Magnetic rubber, demagnetizing magnets, a selection of basic cotton textiles, paper, and some silk textiles will be provided. Iron powders of several grades, liquid latex, varnish, and other materials required for printing will be provided as well. Samples of previous work and related techniques will also be brought to inspire students to continue working independently beyond the scope of the workshop.
