ISS 2008 Shibori Conference in France

7th Shibori symposium - tours - exhibitions - trunkshow - demo's

Shibori: Textiles in Nature

This year‘s theme emphasizes the importance of integrating handcrafts into everyday living if we hope to protect our cultural ecosystems. Without farmers to grow cotton, weavers cannot continue. Without sufficient demand for cloth, dyers and weavers cannot continue, farmers cannot sustain. We look no further than at Japan's disappearing sericulture industry as a devastating example of this chain reaction effect. Thankfully, Japanese weaving and dyeing traditions are alive owing to intense preservation efforts. Still, many cultures struggle to sustain their traditional crafts. Through this symposium, we hope to encourage others to take a closer look at personal culture within a larger, global context and contribute to the perpetuation and evolution of our craft practices.
