vol / fullNatural Indigo: everything you wanted to know

3-daagse workshop met Michel Garcia

This class will be entirely devoted to natural indigo   - You will learn everything you need to know about indigo and its derivatives.

DAY 1:
The first day, we will prepare a big indigo vat of 50 liters minimum, to use during the whole class, to dip various types of fibres and fabrics . The vat will be prepared of Henna leaves, shell lime and natural indigo, with addition of natural gelatin to protect wools and silk. The first day will be mainly dedicated to protein fibres.

During the preparation of the vat, Michel will deal with all cautions and explanations to enable students to create this “universal vat” themselves back home and to make it fully understandable.

DAY 2:
Plain dyeing on cellulose fibres will be done in the Henna vat as well as in a  traditional “cold vat”, also called “the ferrous vat”, made of shell lime, ferrous sulfate and indigo.

A very creative method to realize white patterns on a blue background will be presented as well.  First of all, we will prepare a special resist paste, by mixing together clay, gum and magnesium salt. This resist clay will be applied on a white fabric using different techniques ( stencils, blocks, silk screens, brushes, and so on)  After application and drying  your fabric the next step is dyeing it in the indigo vat, and  rinsing the so treated piece with ordinary water from the tap, which will allow us to easily generate white designs  on a blue background.

About wool and silk, a lovely turquoise blue, called Berlin blue or "soluble indigo" will be presented here, too.   Michel makes this from his own natural indigo and he will bring this for us;
It is "sulfated indigo": This one can be used for plain dyes, using a “one bath process” . It can also be printed on wool and silk. It allows us to get a full range of nice shades.

DAY 3:
The secret of the Maya blue is revealed. “Maya blue” is  a special pigment, prepared with indigo + clay to dye paper pulp in blue. The Maya blue will be prepared in this course, some paper pulp will be stained, and then some sheets of blue paper will be done.

Finally combining some tannin dyes together with the indigo vat, we will discover the secret of the "copper indigo", or Chinese indigo, to get very dark shiny dyed samples of cotton fabric.

Apart from sampling students can also work ‘larger’ size, i.e. bring their own fabrics or scarves to dye in the 50 ltr vat. When using Shibori pls do not use nor bring large clamps!
However, this is not a design nor a production class. Students need to be aware of that!

Spoken language: English.

There will be a labfee for dyes and chemicals and for the fabric sampler.

Verder graag meenemen:
penselen, evt. sjablonen, stempels of thermofax zeefdruk raampjes, (of/of)
papierschepraampje A5 of A6 - max A4
schilderstape, keukenrol, schaar, oude handdoek,
watervaste (permanente) stift voor textiel,
notitieboek (pen en papier),
babywipes, evt een haardroger (max.1000/1200W)
