3-Day Paper & Textiles workshop with Cas Holmes

Be inspired by places visited travel and regular day to day journeys. Possibilities will arise to create complex layered dimensional machine and/or hand stitched 'paintings' informed by some of the techniques explored in Cas’ most recent publication Textile Landscape.. We will explore the possibilities of using old samples of cloth and/or paintings,  photographic and photocopied images, as a stimulus for the creation of new ideas. The colours, textures and changing light of the built and natural landscape can provide stimulus for the narrative, formal or abstract qualities in textile works.

Samples will be produced using a range of techniques including hand application of paint media, mark-making, simple monoprint and ‘wet applique’ to create informal collage and stitch ‘paintings with cloth’

A typical workshop starts with a practical session to experimenting mark-making and other colour application techniques Cas uses in conjunction with found surfaces.  This is followed by an exploration of methods used to join pieces together with adhesive mediums and stitch. As we progress participants will incorporate their own ideas as well as creating sketches, samples and notes for further reference. Participants will leave the course with a sound basis of processes and working samplers, or foundation pieces which they can continue to build on and develop at home.

Student preparation:
The course which is largely centred on the creative re-use of the materials you may have available. Old domestic (not valuable) fabrics or scraps that can be recycled, old paintings and drawings as well as copies of paper items, maps, photos and items gathered on your day to day journeys are useful things to collect. As you work through the course you may choose to make reference from personal images of walls, marks in the land and through using materials you have collected for inspiration. Bring one or two images of previous work if you have them.
