vol / fullUrban Nature: Explore Cloth, Collage, Mark & Stitch

2-day workshop o.l.v. Cas Holmes (UK)

The local landscape or urban townscape can provide a rich vein for stimulus and discovery. Compositions in cloth will reference and discover the overlooked details of the local environmemt (or your own landscape/townscape images) You will build up a background to your picture on a foundation cloth which has been painted or dyed and explore different mark making and print processes/ image transfers. This will be followed by layering and bonding methods before defining images and shapes with stitch.

This workshop looks at the use of found materials and the generation of ideas from within our 'footfall'.  The environment as both source and subject, a 'green' focus to stimulate creativity.

Broad outline of the workshop:

Day One: Introduction to the course.
An introduction to simple colour and print methods using found materials including low tech transfer methods with acrylic gels and paint. Laminating and layering paper and fabric.
Day Two Introduction to stitch.
Working with the textiles and papers to add individual details and stitch together, seams, gathers, tearing, building towards textured surfaces.

We end the course by discussing ideas for future development.

This class can be taken separately or as a follow up on the previous class.
